Man, what a weekend! Beginning with the Nominees Dinner at the ASC Clubhouse on Friday evening, it was filled with Awards-related activities from start to finish. Celebrations continued on Saturday with the Honorees Luncheon, which welcomed a crowd of more than five hundred. Then, capping it off was the granddaddy of them all, Sunday night’s thirty-seventh annual ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, followed by our Cocoanut Grove-themed afterparty that went on until a ridiculous hour. It’s 1PM on Monday as I compose this entry. After a late run, a shower and some breakfast, I’m just starting to feel human again.
Until you’re up to your neck in the ASC’s style of socializing, you don’t realize how exhausting it can be having so much fun. Catching up with old friends, making new ones and just being engaging and “on” all the time is deceptively draining. If you tend to be overwhelmed by swirling faces and voices in the hundreds, this was not the place for you. The action was non-stop! I often wonder how campaigning politicians maintain such a pace while working the banquet circuit, but I suppose their innate phoniness gets them by. They never truly reveal their genuine selves. At these events the opposite was true. The love, respect and admiration everyone expressed for one another was not only a rarity in our self-obsessed industry, it was sincere.
