TRADITION, TRADITION…

Yesterday being Thanksgiving, we continued a long-standing tradition in my home of making The Godfather and The Godfather, Part Two part of our visual landscape.  And despite being distracted by cooking, drink-making, small-talk and the rest of my duties (I’m a gracious host!), every little piece I was able to catch reminded me of an immutable fact: These are the two greatest movies ever made.

If you’re a student or just starting out in your cinematography career, there’s no excuse not to be completely conversant with them.  I would not be exaggerating to say I’ve seen each one a hundred times since their initial release, and there’s not a single viewing that didn’t teach me something new.  I’m not just talking about the camera.  Lessons in writing, directing, production design, costume, hair and make-up…not to mention, the most difficult challenge of all – tone – are all there for the taking.

You don’t need a holiday or any other excuse to do delve in on what The Godfather and The Godfather, Part Two have to offer.  Just do it, and resolve to start off the New Year on your best foot.

Soon, I’ll be providing closer analysis of what has made these two films so special to me.  Be on the lookout.  And be sure to be familiarize yourself beyond the obvious points.  There’s so much more to be gleaned than what meets the eye!
