American Cinematographer’s Shot Craft: Lessons, Tips & Techniques on the Art and Science of Cinematography
by Jay Holben
Adakin Productions Press; 2023
Forewords by M. David Mullen, ASC & Stephen Pizzello
The title might be a mouthful, but it delivers on every point. Among the topics covered are Fundamental Concepts, Formats, Exposure, Lighting, Optics…and a great deal more. Holben, (co-author with Christopher Probst, ASC of The Cine Lens Manual), speaks with the authority of a true expert and appeals equally to both pros and beginners.
Even at this somewhat advanced stage of the game, I picked up a couple of clever pointers while leafing through it last night. I highly recommend it to everyone!
Wow this looks amazing. Totally going to get it.
Yes, definitely grab a copy…it’s excellent!
Last year at the CineGear Expo, I got Mr. Holben signing a copy of “The Cine Lens Manual”. I went this time and he was nowhere to be found. But I’ll have him signing “Shot Craft” as well. Along with the Bible (aka “The ASC Manual”), “The hero with a thousand faces” and “In the blink of an eye,” it’s a must in learning the whole filmmaking craft.
