Chris Nichols, my good friend and one of the principals at special effects company Chaos, recently posted on his blog about a proof-of-concept project I shot for them in April. Set in the Old West, this period piece called for some very special treatment on my part. I was happy to oblige!
The article is informative and entertaining as Nichols deconstructs the various tools and techniques we employed, vis-a-vis an LED volume, Chaos’s latest version of their Arena software, ray tracing, Gaussian splats – and with a nod to antiquity, a split diopter. He also details a visit with the world’s foremost expert on cinema lenses, Panavision’s SVP of Optical Engineering (and another good friend), Dan Sasaki. His analysis of why my choice of the P-Vintage series was appropriate for this show is truly fascinating.
