PRESCIENT, ONCE AGAIN…

You probably haven’t seen nor heard of director Joseph Sargent’s forward-looking 1970 film, Colossus: The Forbin Project (aka, Colossus 1980).  Fifty-six years later, its themes are more relevant than ever!

The April 1969 issue of American Cinematographer thought enough of it to devote an unusually lengthy article to its production, authored by no less an authority than the film’s cinematographer, Gene Polito, ASC.  I’m passing it along as something of a primer before your seeking it out on one of the streamers.

I first saw it on TV as a young teenager and thought it absurd.  How could a computer achieve any form of consciousness and almost take over the world?  What nonsense!

It just goes to show you that anybody can be wrong.  Once…  😉

  1. I remember that article. I once got into a heated discussion online with a Kubrick “expert” who claimed that Kubrick was the first person to push-process an entire film (1975’s “Barry Lyndon”) by 1-stop and “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999) was the first movie to be entirely pushed by 2-stops. I pointed out several old articles in American Cinematographer that mention the majority if not all of the film being pushed, such as this one or the article on “Andromeda Strain”. The guy said I was wrong despite me providing evidence!

  2. Well David, as you well know from hanging around the ASC Clubhouse…some people have very thick heads!
