FILMMAKERS ACADEMY – YES!

         Anyone familiar with this blog will know that I’m a tireless proponent of education, not just for young, up-and-comers but for people at all levels of their movie-making journey.  Over the course of my own pursuit of improvement, I discovered what I believe to be the best resource of them all – Filmmakers Academy.  Created by my friend and colleague Shane Hurlbut, ASC and his lovely wife Lydia, the courses you’ll find on their website are a goldmine of cinematographic expertise.  While I’d never contend to know it all in terms of motion picture photography, I’m certainly part of the upper percentile.  That said, I learned many new things as I delved into their material.  While still enjoying a successful career, Hurlbut has gone to amazing lengths in designing this program.  I don’t recommend too many goods and services, but I can’t emphasize enough what a tremendous asset Filmmakers Academy is for everyone who works behind the camera.

         If you’re like me and not easily impressed, I urge you to review the list of instructionals.  Every aspect of the art and craft is addressed in fine detail by top-notch instructors across a vast collection of video segments.  As you’d expect, production values are high and the takeaways are priceless.  Even though you’d need several months to process the crush of knowledge, what better way could there be for an aspirational cinematographer to spend their time?

         I’m not heaping false praise here, nor am I simply blowing the horn for a favored acquaintance.  Filmmakers Academy is a rare achievement – it’s the genuine item in a landscape that’s too often inhabited by fakes, poseurs and ‘geniuses’ without resumé.  And this might rub some people the wrong way, but Filmmaker Academy’s modest fees are a far worthier investment than the ridiculous tuition demanded by so many film schools.
