PARTY TIME

This week I’ve been supervising color correction for a feature I shot last fall, the title of which I’m not yet at liberty to disclose.  The work took place at Roundabout Entertainment in Burbank, one of the industry’s premiere post-production facilities.  This was my first go-round with them and I was privileged to have superstar DI Colorist Bryan McMahan in the pilot’s seat.  Not only is he a great guy, he’s highly experienced and knowledgeable in all areas of production.  Needless to say, he did a sensational job in getting the most out of the footage he was given.

Though the color grading phase is nerve wracking to many cinematographers, I find it to be an enjoyable adventure.  The film comes to life in new ways and I discover whether concepts conceived months prior are solid, or if a new approach is called for.  If any cinematographer thinks they do it all on their own and that their vision is sacrosanct, they’re severely mistaken.  None of us possess the expertise people like Bryan have; it would be negligent to not take advantage of what they offer.  Every time I step into the suite, I’m happy to meet someone who’s eager to help push what I’ve done across the goal line.  Like an editor, their eyes are fresh and unconcerned with the challenges of a complex shoot.  They don’t care about the changeable weather you struggled with during a daytime sequence or that the caterer was late to set every morning.  Sod that!  We should be grateful that all they know is what they see.  Under the right circumstances, a sensitivity to their taste and alchemy results in something better than either of you could have developed on your own.  Over the years, I’ve been very fortunate in that arena.

Of course, collaboration is key to meaningful gains.  But beware!  Colorists are not magicians and the technology they use is not a panacea.  Just like everything else, you won’t be happy if you expect to see a silk purse after bringing in a sow’s ear.

Fortunately – with thanks to Bryan McMahan and the good folks at Roundabout – I drove home from Burbank a happy guy after each session.
