RIPLEY (2024; Netflix)

The currently-running Netflix limited series, Ripley, is one of the best shows I’ve seen in quite some time.  Drawn from Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, I was a bit dubious going in.  I hadn’t been a fan of Anthony Minghella’s 1999 feature version (John Seale, ASC, ACS) and thus had to be goaded into giving this new iteration a chance.  When I did, I was immediately taken by director Steve Zaillian’s obtuse handling of the narrative and Oscar-winner Robert Elswit, ASC’s striking black and white cinematography.

At eight episodes, it’s an easy binge.  Pay special attention to the brilliantly expressive compositions and graphics.  I assure you, they wouldn’t have the half the power they do if they had been shot in color!

The April 2024 issue of Vanity Fair features David Canfield’s article in which Zaillian and Elswit deconstruct the show’s amazing imagery.  You can find it at the link below.

  1. I totally agree with you. Robert did an amazing job with the visuals- striking compositions, movement, exposures, etc. I credit him with the visual beauty of the show. I was less enamored with the acting and already knew the drama but wow, I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. And the Italian locations didn’t hurt either….bravo Robert Elswit!
