THE CROWN, AGAIN

With awards season in full blossom, one would assume that after a long, challenging year, the cream has finally risen to the top.  While that’s true for the most part, you won’t be seeing the best in cinematography unless you take a look at Season 6 of The Crown (Netflix).

No, I’ll amend that statement.  Pick any one of the series’ sixty episodes and you’ll be treated to some of the most strikingly beautiful work in existence.  Granted, the production is well-supported in budget and schedule, but that guarantees nothing when the rubber meets the road.  The entirety of the camerawork is superb, as are the contributions from every other department, with special praise given to production design and location choice.  Without something appropriate to photograph, The Crown could easily have appeared like another overblown soap opera.  I assure you…that is not the case.

Adriano Goldman, ASC, BSC, ABC set the look during Season 1 and continued in a magnificent vein for twenty-seven episodes.  Following in his wake were cinematographers Ben Wilson, Stuart Howell, BSC, Ole Bratt Birkeland, BSC, Frank Lamm, Rasmus Videbaek, Fabian Wagner, ASC, BSC and Sophia Olsson.  The consistency of what they delivered is remarkable.  The show’s colorists also contribute on an equal, though unsung level.  I’m certain they have more to do with The Crown’s amazing textures than anyone beyond the inner circle would know.

I’ve raved about The Crown before – and with good reason.  Now, I’m raving about it again.  Do yourself a favor and give it a good going over!
