THE DREAM TEAM

Standing, from L-R: Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, Billy Williams, BSC, John Alonzo, ASC, Laszlo Kovacs, ASC and Owen Roizman, ASC.  Seated: Conrad Hall, ASC, William Fraker, ASC.

If ever a more significant group of cinematographers gathered for an afternoon snapshot, I’m yet to see them.  Taken in the mid-seventies during a barbecue at the Malibu home of their mutual agent, Creighton Smith, these men represented the heart and soul of an amazing era in filmmaking.

With the exception of Williams, who lived in England, I was privileged to be friends with all of them, though somewhat later in their lives.  In this photo, at the top of their games, you can sense their youth and vitality.  They also communicate the warmth and camaraderie I witnessed in every exchange I shared with them.  That sentiment seems to be at a premium in so much of the industry today, but theirs was a different world.  With twenty-eight Oscar nominations and five wins to their credit, I’m sure Smith didn’t need to work too hard in securing them gigs.

Right now, any of us would sacrifice a body part to have had their careers.  Hell, I would’ve been happy just to be at the far end of the deck flipping burgers when the picture was taken.  They were all terrific guys…

(Note: At ninety-four and still living in England, Williams is the sole survivor.   He spoke of his career and current activities on the Team Deakins podcast, Season 2\Episode 28, March 15, 2023.)

  1. Billy williams BSC what a great DOP and lovely man and proud to know him as a friend ………

  2. Such a great and glorious honor and privilege to have known and talked with these “Founding Fathers” of Modern Cinematography. So many great evenings listening to these Gentlemen are etched in my memory forever.

  3. Thank you for posting Richard. I never met Billy Williams but instead of flipping burgers at the end of the pier, I was fortunate enough to order them lunch while we remastered many of their masterpieces. I feel blessed to have known them and appreciate their talent and kindness.
