In recognition of the great success enjoyed by the makers of The Brutalist this awards season, here are some photographs from my working trip to London last fall.
They were taken at Barbican Centre, a performing-arts and residential hub in the heart of the city. This massive reservation represents one of the greatest examples of Brutalist style architecture, and though many think of it as an eyesore, I found it an endlessly fascinating place to explore. Everywhere you look, there’s something that appeals to a cinematic eye, even as it flaunts classical definitions of beauty. As you wander about, the environment does precisely what great architecture is supposed to do – it encourages you to conjure all manner of compositions and dramatic displays.
Man, what I would do with that place given an Alexa 35 and half a chance…!

Nicely done. We’re currently in Palma de Mallorca enjoying classical architecture of 16-18th century
We shot there for Quantum of Solace. Mostly in the ramps and courtyard, also Mitchell’s apt was with those buildings as the BG.
Great place.
Certainly unmistakable.
Your photos are fine examples of brutalist architecture which emerged during the 1950s in the United Kingdom. It’s too bad the design used in the
film didn’t follow the patterns, rhythms, and articulation seen in your photos.
