Today, I’d like to send a shout out to my good friend and colleague, John Fauer, ASC. In addition to being an ace cinematographer and successful author, he’s the brain behind the industry’s most comprehensive and informative publication, Film and Digital Times. Its subtitle pretty much says it all: Art, Technique and Technology in Motion Picture Production Worldwide. Nothing else approaches the level of detail he routinely delivers in each issue – and I say this with the assurance that I devour everything that’s out there!
Fauer provides so much useful, up-to-the-minute knowledge that you’d assume he employs a massive staff to help with research, design and delivery. That’s not the case. FD Times is a solo operation that sees him write, edit and provide most of the photographs for every article. It’s an imposing task and I don’t know how he does it. But his long career behind the camera gives him a unique insight into what he covers, which shows in the most welcome of ways. There’s no BS. Just cold, hard facts and informed observations from the creators and users of the latest technologies. Whether you’re a seasoned vet or just starting out in your career, this magazine is a must-have on all accounts.
It’s published six times a year and generally runs in excess of a hundred pages. It also features no ads and is supported wholly by readers and sponsors. Available by subscription, online or on paper, I’d suggest signing up as soon as possible. I’m not a shill, nor do I endorse many products in this space, but after 124 issues I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to share news of this incredible resource. FD Times has been an indispensable part of my kit since its beginning, and once you encounter it, it will become the same for you!
