So much has been said about this movie since its release in theaters on May 15; I won’t bore you with the rehash.
But forget whatever you’ve heard, good or bad. Just go see it!
Beyond its amazingly sophisticated levels of craft and artistry, I was most impressed by the way its creators did so much with so little. Rather than failing miserably by trying to make Lawrence of Arabia on a Roger Corman budget (as so many fledgling filmmakers do), they worked within their limited means and used them as a spark for enhanced creativity. I was so excited to watch a twenty-six year-old director and his equally youthful collaborators do something none of the dinosaur studios can, while at the same time making it look so easy. Let’s hope this is the first crest of a ’70’s-style New Wave in Hollywood.
What a refreshing achievement! Hats off to everyone involved!
After years of doom spiraling, it seems movies aren’t dead, after all. Audiences are turning out in droves for Obsession. Its $340M take (thus far, against a $750,000 budget!) is proof enough of that.
And among the many lessons to be drawn from its massive success is one the traditional industry has all but forgotten: it’s not the tools but the human hand that wields them that’s most important.
Once again, if you haven’t already seen it, just GO!
Well said!
Wasn’t planning to see it but definitely will see it now!
