PARTY TIME

On February 23, the thirty-ninth annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.  Categories include Music Video, Documentary, Spotlight, One-Hour Regular Series, Limited Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television, Half-Hour Series and Theatrical Feature Film.

In addition, Honorary recognition will be bestowed upon Andrzej Bartkowiak, ASC (Lifetime Achievement), Michael Goi, ASC (Career Achievement in Television), John Simmons, ASC (Presidents Award), Joan Churchill, ASC (Lifetime Documentary Award) and Pete Romano, ASC (Curtis Clark, ASC Technology Award).

It should be no surprise that the event always seems to exceed itself with each subsequent edition.  Created in 1986 by Woody Omens, ASC and Michael Margulies, ASC, it has become an industry tradition…but it’s not without an historical precedent.  Check out the below article from the November 1923 issue of American Cinematographer for some background.

If the ASC does anything well, it knows how to throw a party, and lately there have been some terrific ones.  But the reportage of the evening held 102 years ago tells us it must’ve been quite the barn burner.  I don’t know that we’ll equal that level of extravagance this time around, but I guarantee we’ll be trying!

While we won’t be broadcasting the event over the radio as they did in 1923, we will be live streaming. If you can’t be there in person, tune into the festivities through the ASC website: www.theasc.com.

  1. Wow, such a lavish event.
The prose in reporting from 1923 is long gone.
The radio broadcast must have been the real highlight for many as it was the first time people actually heard the voices of the actors and actress.
I wish I could have seen the beautiful model pop out of the film magazine!
See you at the 39th Awards!
